Elephant Appreciation Day at the Zoo 9/18

Elephant Appreciation Day


Join us at the Milwaukee County Zoo on this special day drawing attention to the magnificent elephants, Brittany and Ruth. A trunk-full of activities will be offered including colorful crafts, behind-the-scenes tours of the Elephant Barns and elephant talks and presentations. The day's offerings take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  What a great thing to do with the family!

Celebrate This First-Ever Special Event  – As Special As the Elephants Themselves

Elephants are a keystone species, as they have a huge role in shaping habitats that allow many other animals and plant species to thrive. Participate in fun and educational activities designed to spread awareness and highlight the conservation efforts for these majestic, endangered animals.

Join in these activities to deepen your understanding of elephants and their adaptations, and discover the HUGE role these magnificent animals play in our natural world.

Enter the world of the Zoo’s two African elephants, Ruth and Brittany, for an up close view of their daily activities and care while touring the elephant barn. (11 a.m. -- 1 p.m.)

Learn about elephants in the wild and their habitats and how our Zoo contributes to elephant conservation projects around the world.

Elephants at the Zoo take part in enrichment activities, allowing them to exhibit the same behaviors they would in the wild. Watch Ruth and Brittany interact with a refrigerator box with treats inside (10:30 a.m.) and an enormous ice cube, filled with their favorite fruit and vegetable treats (2 p.m.).

Play games that let you see what it’s like to use a trunk to pick up food and create elephant feet to show how it would feel to walk like an elephant! Also, get your temporary elephant tattoo to show off your support of these animals!

Hear and see how the elephants are trained as they display different behaviors through a special training session with zookeepers. (1:30 p.m.)

Ask questions of our elephant keepers such as, “How do you give an animal that weighs 8,000+ pounds a bath?”

Notice and touch elephant-related artifacts like a real tusk and tail. Enter the raffle to win prizes like paintings actually created by our elephants! All proceeds benefit the International Elephant Foundation (IEF).

Tell your friends and family about the things you learned, and how everyone can do their part to help save elephants and their habitats.

Support efforts to ensure elephants and all species they support continue to be a part of life on our wondrous planet.
