Cold and Flu season is certainly upon us! I know I have had the sniffles lately and Ann and I have noticed a number of absences from school in the last couple weeks due to illnesses. I push, push, push the hand washing at home and at work but sometimes that isn't enough. Think about your home or work place...you wash your hands but does everyone else? How many things have you touched that everyone else has also? I also look for "green cleaning" options. I will admit I use the sprays and the air fresheners but what is that doing for my home? I am thinking if it makes my dog sneeze should I be looking for something else?
A few helpful tips from the
Maid Brigade in Milwaukee!
Flu Fighters
A few things to consider: cleaning chemicals, air fresheners and disinfectants contain chemicals that are proving to cause health problems including asthma and allergies, behavioral and developmental disorders, and damage to blood, organs and central nervous systems, according to recent medical research.
While it is a natural tendency to clean more often and/or more deeply during flu season, consumers should be aware that they may be increasing their health risks based on the products they use. The EPA has determined that indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. One of the main contributors to poor indoor air quality is VOCs emitted from toxic chemicals in common cleaning products.
Products
Give the home or office a thorough cleaning in conjunction with the onset of the fall flu season. Maid Brigade's Green Clean Certified® approach uses products, equipment and methods that reflect the latest green science and have been tested over hundreds of cleanings for health safety.
Ordinary household disinfectants contain neurological toxins that can be harmful, especially to children, pets and the elderly. Eliminate harsh chemicals from the armory of cleaning supplies built up over time and look for ecologically-sound disinfectants, such as vinegar, to replace them.
Just because a product is non-toxic doesn’t mean it can’t harm family and environmental health. Home and business owners can learn about the products they use from the Household Products Database by visiting:

Germs
When cleaning to eliminate germs, remember that spraying and wiping isn’t enough—the disinfectant needs to remain on the surface being cleaned for up to 10 minutes to effectively kill lingering germs and bacteria.
The safest way to disinfect involves no chemicals at all. Dry steam vapor treatments, such as VapurClean Advantage™ penetrates deep within surface pores where germs hide and multiply and kills them on contact. Dry steam vapor is proven effective against MRSA, avian and swine flus, salmonella, e.Coli, staph and other infectious diseases.
