Experience Columbus, Ohio: Roar and Explore Package Review

As many of you may remember, my crazy family of six took a trip to Columbus, Ohio a couple of weeks back.  It served as a much needed vacation and an unforgettable road trip!  We left later than I wanted to leave, what a shocker with four kids running around!  I was nervous about going as my nine month old had a fever the day before we were supposed to be leaving (go figure!).  After much hemming and hawing and a trip to see the doctor, we decided to go!  I am so glad we did because we had a great time as a family!  My sister lives out in Ohio, so I was thrilled that she and my new brother in law were going to meet us at the hotel that Friday evening!  We couldn't wait to take full advantage of everything that the Roar and Explore package had to offer.

We started by checking into the Grove City Drury Inn.  This was my first time staying at a Drury Inn and the second I walked in the door I was impressed with how clean the property was and how friendly the staff was!  We checked in, but it was too late to check out any of the fun activities, so we just hung out at the pool at the hotel and relaxed.  The hotel was pretty busy.  After asking around, I found out that there was a HUGE softball tournament going on that weekend.  I don't think I have ever stayed at a hotel that was so busy.  But, we were able to see past that as we felt at home and everyone was very friendly.  My children just loved being able to swim around in the pool and the hot tub (which was not too hot...felt more like a bath).  However, that is PERFECT for my kids.  They love going into the "hot bath tub."  I have to mention the pool was very unique.  The pool is half inside and half out.  You can swim under the window divider to get to the outside portion of the pool...that was very entertaining for my two oldest.  What did I love the most on the first night?  FREE soda and popcorn until 10!  LOVED that!  It made the transition from pool time to bedtime so much easier with the little bribe of "We have to go back to the room as the pool is closing, but let's get some popcorn and soda (GASP!  My kids don't ever get to drink soda!!) before bed!"

So, the next morning...sigh...not off to a good start.  My husband woke up with the chills and a fever...our little pumpkin had passed on his fever to his father.  Needless to say, the day started off rather rocky.  I took the kids down to breakfast.  The breakfast, by the way, was OUTSTANDING!  There was plenty to choose from (eggs, sausage, waffles, cereal, fruit, yogurt,...).  I instantaneously felt even more sorry for my husband - he can't pass up a good breakfast!  So, there I sat in the lobby area eating with the three oldest.  Quite hectic...I am just so glad my daughter is so good with the boys (she's only 6, but she's a little mama in the making!).  After eating, we loaded up the van.  I was thrilled my husband decided to tough it out because this day was to be action packed!  The main street was insane to maneuver your way around, but eventually we were on our way to the zoo and Zoombezi Bay.

We decided to do Zoombezi Bay first just because it was soooo hot and I wanted to give the kids a chance to cool off.  We walked through the zoo over to the Zoombezi Bay as they are connected.  We had a cooler packed that we had to check in before entering. So, we finally made our way into the waterpark and were amazed!  I was amazed at how clean it was given how very busy it was!  We immediately headed to find some chairs to get situated and headed over to the children's play area.  I must say, there is a little something for everyone at this loaded waterpark.  I looked longingly at the water slides that I would have been going down with my daughter if my husband were feeling better.  We were all bummed that he was under the weather as it really limited all we could do.  So, we just took it easy and I took the kids in the lazy river a few times.  What did I love the most about that?  There was a little wave pool built in to the river as you turn one of the corners...my kids could have made a day out of that alone!  It was a great time...even with a sick husband!  My nine month old had a great time hanging out with dad in the kiddie pool splashing around!  Time was limited as we got off to such a rocky start in the morning, so we quickly got dressed and headed out to the zoo.  Let me make sure that I say that only being there a couple of hours was NOT enough time.  If I had it to do all over again I would for sure give the water park itself a full day.  It was well worth it!

Next stop:  The Columbus Zoo - the nation's Number 1 zoo in America!  WOW!  I thought the Milwaukee County Zoo was amazing, but I have to say...the Columbus Zoo is spectacular!  Due to time constraints, my husband's fever, the sweltering heat, and my infant's heat rash, we had to cut the zoo very short.  We walked around for about two hours and didn't even make a dent in it!  If I were to do it again...definitley give the zoo an entire day!  There is so much to see and you do not want to be rushed!  While we were there, they were filming something for TV about dinosaurs.  SO...my two year old went nuts with excitement!  He loves dinosaurs (scared of lightning, but could sit and eat with a dinosaur...go figure!).  So, we had to stop and watch the filming of the dinosaur clip and they have  a pretty cool area that has a dinosaur that sprays water on you...well, that never gets old!  My children perked up immediately and giggled nonstop!  It was super hot and we had to get out of the heat as I felt that I was getting looks from people when they saw my son (probably not, but we all have been there before, right?)...he looked miserable and his poor rash was awful!  I had to stop to feed him twice while we were at the zoo as the heat was unbearable!  But, let me say that I did love the fact that they had nursing stations throughout the zoo.  VERY impressed with that!  What did we get to see at the Zoo, you ask?  Let me see...they have an awesome park that the kids played on, a fun carousel, the cool dinosaur area, flamingos, and kangaroos!  Kangaroos!  SO COOL!  You can actually "Walk Among the Kangaroos."  You get to go into this fenced in area that has a trail for you to walk on and the kangaroos walk on the other side of this trail...pretty awesome!  It was so very hot that the poor kangaroos were just taking it easy, but we did hear talk from other people about the kangaroos actually being right in the midst of it all and jumping across the path...I loved that!  BUT, I cannot stop there because I wanted to save the best for last. Even though we were not able to spend much time there at all (and I really wish I could do it all over again because this would have been stop number ONE) there is an amazing aquarium there.  My children were hypnotized by the fish!  We could have sat there and watched the fish all day long...VERY impressive!

What an action packed day we had at Zoombezi Bay, the Columbus Zoo and aquarium.  So, we were exhausted and my husband looked like death...no, not saying that to be mean, but he was white as a sheet and seriously dehydrated.  So, we rushed back to the hotel and I took the kids down to dinner to enjoy the Kickack that Drury Inn offers...AMAZING!  There is a good selection of food and if you get there early enough between certain hours, you can enjoy three free adult beverages and a free meal!  SO worth it!  My sister came and met me at this point otherwise I think I would have gone insane trying to balance all four children and a husband that bolted up to the room to lay down!  So, my sister and I entertained the children and enjoyed a nice meal.  We decided to make that night as low key as possible and checked in for the night pretty early after a nice swim...I did not even need to bribe the children with the popcorn and soda that night!
One more thing I would like to add about the Drury Inn is that they are pet friendly.  We saw so many dogs while we were at the hotel...my kids loved it!  My parents were staying at a hotel nearby and stopped with their dog!

We woke up the next morning and I was so happy that the bug seemed to have worked it's way out of my husband over night.  We ate a very good breakfast as a family (did I forget to mention how THRILLED I was to have my husband back?!?) before heading out.  Our very last stop before we headed back to Milwaukee was COSI, Center of Science and Industry.  I have to be honest, when I walked in I was a bit overwhelmed.  There seemed to be so much going on I didn't really know which way to turn.  But, I found my way to the ticket counter and took her advice to see the next viewing of the dinosaur movie.  I was nervous...it was 3D and, I guessed, rather loud.  But, my kids all loved it.  We anticipated that my two year old would have a meltdown, but he was just fine.  I would not, however, recommend it for most children under the age of five as it is more of a documentary and geared more towards adults and older children.  I, myself, found it interesting, but if you are able, see if you can sneak in there without the little ones (babysitting duty, anyone?).     After the movie, we headed off to see the other areas of COSI. We walked out of the theatre and saw what I think was my husband's favorite part of the whole trip!  There was a unicycle that went across a wire...and you could actually go on it!  I could tell my husband really wanted to go on it, but there was a long line!  So, we went and checked out a super cool Cracker Jack exhibit that seemed to be hidden down a hallway.  That was pretty impressive.

Okay, I don't think most would find it all that interesting, but I thought it was awesome!  They had toys from the first boxes of Cracker Jacks.  They had nearly every toy from the lifetime of the Cracker Jack box.  It was so cool to see the toys and vintage boxes.  My four year old son went nuts and exclaimed, "I want ALL of them!"  THAT was very cool.  There really is some super stuff to see at COSI,  so when you go plan to take your time and see it all!  Some of the highlights from COSI...the submarine that the kids were able to go into, King Triton's Cove area, the space exploration area, and the gathering area in the midst of it all - there's always something going on there!  The dinosaur exhibit was rather amazing!  There were mechanical dinosaurs and first person simulators where you could explore and live like a dinosaur even if for just a little while.

Here is the package I was able to review and all of the details:
