Movie Review - Real Steel

My wonderful wife and I had the opportunity to see a sneak peek of Real Steel with Ann and her family, which hits theaters today (October 7th).

The movie takes place in the not too distant future, a future in which boxing matches between humans have been replaced by boxing matches between robots, because when robots box the carnage can be much more severe, which is what the public wanted.

Hugh Jackman plays Charlie a former boxer who now travels with his boxing robot, taking fights and avoiding responsibility and people he owes money to.  When he suddenly gains temporary custody of his 11 year old son Max (Dakota Goyo), he tries to pass him off to his long time friend Bailey (Evangeline Lilly), so that he can continue trying to make a life on the boxing circuits.  He quickly finds out his son is as stubborn as he is and he ends up taking him with him.

Together they stumble upon an old robot, named Atom, who was never meant to see the inside of the ring, but Max is convinced there is something special about him.  Together father and son work to make Atom a top contender, while building their own relationship, until Atom gets a shot at the title.

The robot boxing scenes are pretty exciting to watch as are the sections of the movie where Max teaches Atom to dance.  I think this movie would be a fun father/son outing, who wouldn't enjoy watching robots box?

This movie is PG-13 as there is some adult language and topics.

Thoughts From an Owners Recliner - Falcons Week

Wow!  What an offensive explosion against the Broncos last Sunday.  Aaron Rodgers was nearly perfect, and became the first player ever to throw for over 400 yards, have 4 TD passes, and 2 TD runs.  It was also good that each TD pass went to a different receiver.

As good as the scoring was, there were still some things to improve on.  James Starks continues to look hesitant at times to hit the hole and head up field.  He had a decent day when it was all over, but I think his hesitation has caused him to leave some yards on the field.  The defense continues to give up a lot of yards, but so far the offense has been able to overcome that.  The turnovers the defense is creating has also helped to limit the damage of the yardage they give up.  They created 4 more turnovers against the Broncos, including a pick six from Charles Woodson.

I would like to toot my own horn a little by pointing out last week I predicted that we would see both Matt Flynn and Alex Green play, just call me Nostradamus.

This week the whole country will get to see our team on display as we head to Atlanta for a Sunday night game.  The last time we played there we dominated them in the divisional round of the playoffs on our way to winning the Super Bowl.  The offense as a whole, and Rodgers specifically, seem to play even better in a dome than they do outside.  I have heard it is because Rodgers gets to wear his special shoes when we play inside.  The Falcons have not played up to expectations so far this year.  I am a little worried about this game, but we should be able to go home with a victory because we have been able to avoid playing down to the level of our competition, which is what a championship team should do.  As weird as this sounds, we need to win in order to at least keep pace with the Detroit Lions and their current undefeated record.

For the Broncos game I ate home made hot pockets, made from a recipe I found in my most recent issue of Food Network Magazine .

I made broccoli cheddar hot pockets, however you could go in several different directions in regards to the fillings.  Some that I thought of were:

Taco - taco meat, onions, and cheese, with salsa and sour cream on the side
Pizza - mozzarella and your favorite pizza toppings
Rueben - corned beef, swiss, and sauerkraut with a 1000 Island dipping sauce
Cordon Bleu - shredded chicken, ham, and swiss
Plain ham and cheese
Mushroom and Swiss - ground beef, mushrooms, and swiss

Here is how I made the broccoli cheddar hot pockets:

For the filling will need 1.5 cups chopped broccoli florets, 1.75 cups shredded cheddar cheese, and 3 TBS sour cream.

Cook the broccoli in boiling water for about 1 minute, then drain and rinse under cold water to cool them down, then dry them with a paper towel.  Mix the cooked broccoli with the cheese and sour cream until combined.

The recipe calls for using a refrigerated bread dough as your crust.  I found the bread dough to be very difficult to roll out, so the next time I make these I think I would use a pie crust instead, you could buy a refrigerated pie crust, but I would make mine from scratch, I make a pretty good light and flaky pie crust.

If you use the bread dough, cut it into 4 pieces and roll out each piece into a rectangle, place a quarter of your filling onto the rectangle then fold over and pinch together the edges to seal.

Place your pockets on a baking sheet seam side down.  Brush each pocket with egg wash, then for an additional touch, I sprinkled sesame seeds on top of each pocket.

Bake in a 425 degree oven for about 15 minutes or until the crusts are golden brown.  Enjoy.

“Today’s women are clearly busier than ever - especially moms - and we’re turning to our mobile devices to help us keep it all together,” said 30Second Mom founder Elisa All, a new-media entrepreneur and mother of three. “Gone are the days of being tied to a computer. Forget the laptop - Mommy needs a smartphone!”

According to recent reports by eMarketer and BabyCenter, moms are more likely to have a smartphone than the general population, spending an average of 6.1 hours a day on the mobile web, and 91 percent of moms do not leave home without their phones. U.S. Cellular knows this mobile mom well and meets her needs with a growing number of products and services designed to simplify her life.

“We’re excited about the partnership with 30Second Mom because the site offers helpful tips and great advice packaged in an easy-to-use mobile platform that moms can tap into everyday,” said Mary N. U.S. Cellular associate and busy mom Allison Ritt will be among the 20-plus site contributors and will be posting mobile tips. 30Second Mom members can comment, share and interact with contributors, as well as submit their own tips.

“I wanted to partner with U.S. Cellular because they really understand and care about the mobile mom,” said All. “Their reputation for excellent customer service and for having the happiest customers in wireless makes them a company I wanted to work with to share great information on this new mobile platform.”

How to Moderate Electronic Usage and a FREE event at Ebenezer Child Care Centers

Parenting Tip:  The Wired Child - How to Moderate Electronic Usage

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Did you know that, according research, today’s youth between the ages of 8-18 are now spending about seven and a half hours per day consuming electronic entertainment?

According to Beverly Anderson, Executive Director of Ebenezer Child Care Centers with locations in Milwaukee, Mequon, Greenfield, Oak Creek, and Wauwatosa, “Although this seems almost unbelievable, it was found that on average, today’s youth daily watch about four hours of television or video, spend two hours playing video games, and are on the internet for over an hour.”

“And because many teenagers often use multiple devices simultaneously, a youth may spend a combined total of 10 or more hours dailyentertaining themselves with electronics. What makes this figure even more alarming is the fact that these figures do not include time spent listening to digitally recorded music, texting, or talking on the phone.”

So how do you as a parent moderate your child’s electronic usage? Here are some helpful tips:

Be a Role Model
Minimize the time that you use electronic devices in front of your children. Let your children know that you value the powerful and useful technology available through electronics, but that family time is equally important. Encourage a “no electronics time,” perhaps after dining, when the entire family plays a board game together or enjoys quiet reading time without being “plugged in.”

Keep Electronics Out of the Bedroom
Do not place televisions or computers in your children’s bedrooms. Likewise, do not allow hand held devices with internet access into your children’s bedrooms either. Instead, place TVs and computers in common areas within your home, such as a living or family room, and require that all hand held devices also remain in these rooms where you can monitor and limit what your children is watching or searching for.

Be Knowledgeable
As a parent, it is your responsibility to know what the popular games and gadgets are for children your children’s age. This way, you can discuss with your children what you feel is appropriate or not appropriate based on your family’s standards.

Make it clear to your children that electronic devices are great, but only when they are used within the rules and guidelines set by your family, and that your family has a zero tolerance rule for viewing violence or adult-themed content with electronics.

Likewise, if your children want to join a social networking site such as Facebook, only allow them to do so if they will be your “friend” on the site, so you can monitor their posts.

Ebenezer Child Care Centers will be hosting a FREE Family Fun Night on “The Wired Child” on Thursday, October 13, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at their Downtown Milwaukee Location at 340 West St. Paul Avenue across from the main post office. What can parents to do to encourage a moderate, responsible use of electronic entertainment?  Many researchers, educators, and child development experts recommend a comprehensive approach involving positive role modeling, dialogue and participation, reasonable limits, and the encouragement of positive and responsible media use.  Come to this Family Fun Night to learn just how to do this!  Activities will include playing with orange playdough and pumpkin cookie cutters, making pumpkin noodle necklaces, and playing “Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin. In addition to the activities, you will have the opportunity to enjoy dinner on us! Registration is required. Please call 414-643-5070 to register.

Ebenezer Child Care Centers is a not-for-profit, locally based agency committed to providing early childhood programs from the heart. The agency prides itself on being different from other child care providers in that it offers a home-like atmosphere; individualized, nurturing care; and a structured curriculum that is virtues-based for every child’s developmental stage.

Every Ebenezer Child Care Center focuses on all aspects of a child’s development:  cognitive, physical, emotional, and social. In addition to providing quality care, the agency also offers a variety of free Family Fun Nights and other educational programming all aimed at helping parents.

The agency has locations in downtown Milwaukee, on Milwaukee’s southside, in Greenfield, Mequon, Oak Creek, and Wauwatosa. The agency’s main office is located at 1496 South 29th Street, Milwaukee. For more information, please call 414-643-5070 or visit the agency’s website at www.ebenezerchildcare.com.
