Did you know that children can loose on average 2.5 months of what they learned during the school year just over the summer?  Keep that learning fresh and up to date over the summer.

Of course reading is important, if your child loves to read this isn't an issue.

If your child is not an avid reader try to make it fun...
  • set goals and reward when the goal is met
  • make the library a fun place, reward the reading with a fun movie or computer game when the books are done
  • set up a special reading sanctuary
  • let your kiddo read what they are interested in, try and keep it around their age/grade level though, older is better than younger if they understand and comprehend it
  • check library and book stores for reading programs

Math
This can be tasty and helpful.
  • Some children learn better by having concrete things to learn with, use what you have: blocks, dominoes, Legos...
  • Cook and bake!  Measurements are tough but with real use they make more sense, to make it tougher only make half batches or 1/4 for the recipe so there are a lot of conversions.  It will be fun eating the labors of your learning.
  • Use online math games there is a free site called coolmath.com, there are a lot of fun games and they run the gambit, many are really fun but you are learning logic and critical thinking.
  • Measure things throughout the day, how tall is this, how many do we need...
  • Have your child figure out the change and budget for shopping.

Social Studies, Geography, and History
Reading again...

  • Pick up  maps, some great atlases or some newspapers
  • If your children are older watch Jeopardy
  • Watch news programs

Spelling and writing
  • Make a summer journal, take some time each night and write about the days events
  • Make a friend or family member a pen pal
  • Learn a new word a day
  • Have your children spell out words when they are requesting things

Art and music
  • Find instruments at rummage sales or make your own out of recyclables
  • Use recyclables for projects, find old frames and make family portraits

Physical Education
  • Get active, take a walk everyday
  • Play games!

Are there activities you do every summer to keep the learning on going?
