We received a really neat educational video for kids the: Steps4Kids Handwriting DVD!

The DVD starts with a 6 minute video for parents.

There are great tips and reminders-the video recommends that an area is designated for writing when it is time to practice. The area needs to be free of distractions, have sharpened pencils, paper and no toys or other items on the table. It is also important for the child’s feet to be on the floor-if the table is too high just have your child place their feet on a stool.

There is also an explanation of types of pencils.

The video shows the proper way to hold a writing instrument and how to correct a grip as well.

The video is very easy to understand. It gives you different tricks to use for instance-instead of just writing with a pencil and paper you can practice your writing using chalk outside! You should make it fun!!!

The 2nd section of DVD works on uppercase letters. The narrator went through the alphabet and how to hold your pencil. The narrator also went through the tips on how you should be sitting and making sure you are ready to start writing. This section started with the letter “F”, I really liked how a real hand is showing how to write the letters-it is not just a graphic or animation. The real hand is using a marker and lined paper. I thought it was great that example words were given to really reinforce early reading skills.

The 3rd section is the lowercase letters starting with the letter “l”. The narrator uses fun words like “zoom from the top line to the bottom line”. Who doesn’t like to “zoom”? The narrator is also encouraging and has a pleasant easy to listen to voice. At the end there are tips on how to remember how to write your letters.

My oldest son has been practicing for a few minutes each day-he was not happy about it at first but now he is looking forward to those few concentrated minutes each day! His writing has really improved and he is really starting to recognize and write his letters!
