The Milwaukee County Zoo’s most recent addition to the Humboldt Penguin flock, a female chick named Liberty, hatched July 4, is now on public exhibit.
Liberty can be seen swimming in the exhibit pool with her family, father, Jack, and mom, Eva. At hatching, Liberty weighed about 86 grams, and as of September 23, weighed in at approximately 3 kilograms. Zookeepers report that she’s an excellent swimmer and can usually be seen swimming and diving in the outdoor pool, although she does have access to the indoor off-public exhibit areas when she chooses.
The last time the Zoo hatched a Humboldt penguin chick was in 2008.
Native to the coasts of Chile and Peru, Humboldt penguins don’t have their adult feathers and coloration until they’re about one year old. Liberty has light and dark grey feathers; when she’s full grown, she will have a black stripe on her chest, and a black patch from the sides of the eyes down to her beak.
During your next trip to the Zoo, be sure to visit Liberty!
