The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is offering up a fun and free online science program called Summer Brain Games that will keep kids learning this summer and prevent the “summer brain drain.” Research shows that kids can lose one to three months of learning over the summer, what’s called the “Summer Brain Drain.” Summer Brain Games is a great way to combat this by keeping kids thinking and learning over the summer in a fun and engaging way. Each week’s online kit will feature an experiment or science challenge that can easily be performed at home with kids of all ages (and with a little adult supervision). It’s offered in both English and Spanish. Register for this fun and FREE program and you’ll get a pass to come to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry for free this summer.

How important is it to have your kids continue to learn over the summer even though school is out? In my family, we read, we write, and now we do some fun Science activities to take up time during our warm summer days...with the help of Summer Brain Games from the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Today I spent the day with my two oldest doing some fun building of a simple hydroponic garden system where water takes the place of the soil to see if your plants grow faster and better. It is going to take a while to see the results, but we all had such a good time building, making predictions, and exploring. They had such a good time and it helped to keep us all occupied while the younger siblings napped...and led to some very interesting conversation. It's funny how much we stand to learn from our children when we do projects like this. It was great to see my two oldest getting along and working together...and discussing what they thought might happen. We even did some research online to learn more about plants and what they need to grow and the averages that it took plants to grow. If you are going to do something similar at home, I highly suggest doing a little research beforehand and be prepared to research more things that you can learn from it. The hardest part for me was that, in all honesty, I didn't know the answer to a lot of questions that were asked. We discussed so much, but I feel like if I had done a little more research beforehand, we could have had even more discussion. There was a lot of guessing on all parts of this fun activity. Also I recommend going to the library, with your children if at all possible, and getting some books about whatever the theme seems to be for the week of the Summer Brain Games. Most importantly, be prepared for some fun times and great conversation with your children!
