Wil-Kil Pest Control: Summer Entertaining Tips
With longer days and warmer nights, it is the perfect time for Wisconsinites to get outdoors and start enjoying the warm weather. From picnics and tailgates to backyard cookouts and parties on the patio, outdoor entertaining is the perfect way to kick summer fun into high gear.
In the midst of planning the perfect gathering it is important to remember that pests love a party as much as the rest of us. Before packing up coolers or throwing burgers on the grill, homeowners should take proactive steps to avoid unwanted pests crashing the festivities and sending guests running for the door.
These are also great tips to keep in mind in the midst of Brewers tailgate season and summertime picnics!
A few tips from my friends at Wil-Kil Pest Control to get the party started (and keep it going!):
• Check for holes, rips and tears in screens and windows, repairing or replacing them when necessary
• Use low pressure and sodium vapor lights outdoors. Certain light bulbs will attract insects including fluorescent, halogen, incandescent, mercury vapor and some LED lights
• Eliminate standing water as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests
o Change water in birdbaths and wading pools once or twice a week; Monitor sprinkling systems
• Stinging insects send half a million people to the emergency room every year. Wasps are attracted to fragrances, so avoid using fragrant candles as party decorations. Also, distance fragrant flowering plants from the event area.
• Do not allow weeds to grow uncontrolled near the home
• Unclog rain gutters and keep flat roofs dry
• Apply appropriate insecticide to shrubs, flowers and grassy areas
• Provide insect repellent for guests and have citronella candles, tiki torches, etc. on hand
• If guests are going in and out of the house, make sure to shut the doors
• Keep food and drinks covered and sealed
o Cans and bottles make perfect hiding places for stinging insects – keep them sealed whenever possible
• Clean up spills right away
• Serve food indoors if possible
• Bring dishware and utensils indoors right away
