Tips For Safe Trick-or-Treating

Arriving home safe and sound is one of the best Halloween treats of all.

To that end, be sure that costumes and goody bags have reflective strips that improve visibility to drivers, said Dr. Sampson Davis, an emergency medicine doctor at Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus, N.J.

Trick-or-treaters should also carry a flashlight, and costumes should be flame-resistant, Davis said.

He offers these others tips:

- If you plan to use makeup, test it on a small area of skin first to ensure it doesn't cause an allergic reaction. Wash makeup off immediately after returning home.

- Costume accessories should be soft and pliable in order to reduce injury risk. Don't wear decorative contact lenses, which can cause eye infections.

- Comfortable and supportive footwear can help prevent blisters and sprains.

- Don't let children eat homemade treats made by strangers and limit the amount of treats they eat at one time.

- When trick-or-treating, children should stay alert and walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

"The reality is there are predators who use Halloween in particular as a day to disguise themselves when plotting an attack," Davis said. "Safeguard your children by making sure they stick together in a large group and have an adult along to prevent an incident from unfolding."

He reminded trick-or-treaters never to approach or get in a car with a stranger and never enter the home of a stranger. "Halloween is a fun time. Let's make sure we do all that is possible to keep it that way," Davis said in a hospital news release.

If children aren't accompanied by an adult, they should carry a charged cell phone so they can call for help immediately, or provide parents with updates about their location, he said. And kids should know not to text while walking or crossing an intersection.

Monitor how much your kids eat and "filter through the bag of goodies received during trick-or-treating," Davis added.

Discard homemade treats and unwrapped goods, he said. "The risk isn't worth it, as one doesn't know the exact ingredients used in preparation. Prevent possible allergy exposure, bacteria and lastly poison by only allowing wrapped, sealed treats," Davis said.

Preserving Your Carved Pumpkins

For years carving pumpkins have been passed down for generations.  One thing I always have hated is the amount of time you put into carving your pumpkin - and the amount of time that it takes for your pumpkin to rot.

I came across a few ways to preserve your carved pumpkin to make it last longer and I can't wait to try it out this year.

So the intact skin of a pumpkin is what protects it, but when you carve it - various organisms (bacteria, insects, fungi etc), oxygen in the air and dehydration get inside and break it down.

Sterilize the pumpkin to kill off bacteria and seal the surfaces to prevent from drying out.

This simple task will keep it for about a week.

Here's how:

-Remove dirt: wipe the exterior surfaces of the pumpkin clean using a damp cloth

-Make a bleach solution  - 1 tbsp of bleach per quart of water and put it in a spray bottle

-Spray the pumpkin inside and all cut areas of pumpkin with the solution.

-Let it penetrate and dry for about 20 minutes

-Rub all the carved or cut surfaces with petroleum jelly

-Wipe away access with a paper towel

NOTE: try to keep pumpkin out of direct sunlight and try to keep it as cool as possible, but above freezing.

I just grabbed some really awesome pumpkins at Walmart this week for $2.88.  That's the lowest price for the size of pumpkin I've seen.

It's almost here! Check out these money saving tips for Halloween...

Are you looking for some ways to save on your Halloween?  Being thrifty is possible for every holiday and any time of the year.  From costumes to electricity you can save, those pennies will turn into dollars and with even more holidays coming up saving early helps. 

Candy/Treats: This Halloween consider purchasing items that are not perishable to give out as treats, Halloween does not just have to be candy it can be tattoos, bouncy balls, homemade recycled crayons, pencils or whatever else you can get a great deal on.  Kids get a lot of candy, they will be surprised and probably excited to get something different that they can use instead of a piece of candy they might not like and probably don't really need.  Also with these items if you don't have a lot of  Trick or Treaters you can save it for next year!  You will then be pushing your savings into another year.  If you really want to do candy make sure you are looking for coupons and they are coming out you will just need to clip or print them.  If you are going the candy route you may want to purchase treats that you will eat at home, you might not want candy around but it is better to have items you will use instead of items you don't like going to waste.  Also consider teaming up with a neighbor and just having one of your houses open for the Trick or Treaters, you can pool your treat resources and have fun getting together for the holiday.

Are you giving out treats at school or work?  Consider giving out homemade coupons...at school "good for a two hour play date at my house", at work "good for my parking spot for one day", "good for an extra day of me driving the carpool".

Costumes: Look for fun items you already have and create a costume around those.  Maybe a black cat (black pants, black shirt, black shoes) you might need to purchase a black head band with ears or make your own with felt or foam from a craft store.  Look at your local stores for little pieces that might be a great accent to a costume that you are making from home.  Not only will you save by making something yourself and picking up an item or two but if you are shopping locally you are helping to support local businesses.  Check out what your local Goodwill has in stock.    Trade with neighbors or cousins!

Electricity:   This is a silly one but it is Halloween, it is dark, it is creepy...turn off the lights or get low wattage bulbs!  Are you going out?  Use a flashlight with rechargeable batteries or a crank flashlight, these can be a lot of fun for children.  Use glow necklaces, bracelets or sticks, these can usually be found at party or discount stores.

Going out and celebrating:If you want to head to a pumpkin farm you might want to try and find one that has set prices versus paying er pound.  Also look for a place that will let you pay per activity and let your family choose one or two instead of doing everything, then you will have something to look forward to next year.  If you have a membership to the museum or zoo see what they have planned versus going somewhere that you will have to pay, this would already be part of your membership benefits.

Getting together: Do a potluck or a chili dump.  Potluck, all guests bring a spooky dish to share.  Chili dump: you start the base and everyone brings the ingredients.  Maybe snacks would be a better option, have your party later so everyone will have had dinner and just provide some light snacks to munch on, again ask guests to bring something.

Ways to save this Halloween...

Are you looking for some ways to save on your Halloween?  Being thrifty is possible for every holiday and any time of the year.  From costumes to electricity you can save, those pennies will turn into dollars and with even more holidays coming up saving early helps. 

Candy/Treats: This Halloween consider purchasing items that are not perishable to give out as treats, Halloween does not just have to be candy it can be tattoos, bouncy balls, homemade recycled crayons, pencils or whatever else you can get a great deal on.  Kids get a lot of candy, they will be surprised and probably excited to get something different that they can use instead of a piece of candy they might not like and probably don't really need.  Also with these items if you don't have a lot of  Trick or Treaters you can save it for next year!  You will then be pushing your savings into another year.  If you really want to do candy make sure you are looking for coupons and they are coming out you will just need to clip or print them.  If you are going the candy route you may want to purchase treats that you will eat at home, you might not want candy around but it is better to have items you will use instead of items you don't like going to waste.  Also consider teaming up with a neighbor and just having one of your houses open for the Trick or Treaters, you can pool your treat resources and have fun getting together for the holiday.

Are you giving out treats at school or work?  Consider giving out homemade coupons...at school "good for a two hour play date at my house", at work "good for my parking spot for one day", "good for an extra day of me driving the carpool".

Costumes: Look for fun items you already have and create a costume around those.  Maybe a black cat (black pants, black shirt, black shoes) you might need to purchase a black head band with ears or make your own with felt or foam from a craft store.  Look at your local stores for little pieces that might be a great accent to a costume that you are making from home.  Not only will you save by making something yourself and picking up an item or two but if you are shopping locally you are helping to support local businesses.  Check out what your local Goodwill has in stock.    Trade with neighbors or cousins!

How I saved on my Halloween treats last year...

When you think of Halloween you might not think of it as being a holiday that coincides with Drunk Driving-but unfortunately it does.  Think ahead and be safe wherever you go and whatever you may be doing this Halloween season.

 

Halloween means dark streets full of little kids distracted by candy and costumes. That makes it especially important to start planning a safe and sober ride home from whatever fun you'll be having that night - so your evening doesn't turn into a real nightmare.

Whether at a Halloween party, a costume contest at a bar or trick-or-treating through the neighborhood, many of us will be on the road this weekend. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ad Council are reminding everyone that the best way to stay safe is to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before you head out for your Halloween festivities.

REVIEW: Halloween Printables

I had an opportunity to review some fun Halloween Printables. I used and will be using these for the upcoming holidays with the children I work with! I am always looking for fun and different activities that are easy to use and affordable. These are great for teachers, care givers or anyone who want to have fun!

The Halloween and Thanksgiving games are really helpful as well as fun and easy to use! All I needed was my computer and printer-I also used my personal laminater. There are a variety of games-fill-in the blank, scavenger hunts, word scrambles, “mad libs”, trivia, coloring sheets, memory games, charades, matching games, mazes, synonyms, word searches, left-right games, some games for adults, a couple football games and a pin the head on the monster game. I counted 50 games! There is definitely something for everyone! I found a couple of the coloring pages had pictures of a woman that was not dressed appropriately for children-she was a vampire or a witch. You could just not use those pages. I thought it was great how some of the games had the option of being in black and white or color. All trivia and fill in the blank games or anything that needed an answer came in with an answer key-that made them very easy to use. Some games also came with “extra” cards or spaces where you could add your own clue or question so they were great if you wanted to customize the game.
As an educator I appreciate that many of the games could be laminated so they can be used from year to year. This really cuts down on waste, planning time and cost.
For the children’s games I would suggest that children starting in 2nd grade could use them without constant supervision or little instruction. For younger children they would need the help of an older child or adult. You know the kids you work with or your children’s friends, if you think they can handle it they probably can-I can’t wait to use the Thanksgiving quizzes at Thanksgiving Dinner!
